The Destination

Chatham is located on the Lower Cape, which is the narrow portion before the land bends sharply toward the north. The peninsula’s iconic image is of a lighthouse, perched above a rocky cliff and steering adventurers safely to shore. The Cape’s constantly moving and dangerous shoals created this need early on and many are still operated today by the United States Coast Guard, including the Chatham Light. In the Atlantic waters beyond you may glimpse passing humpback, finback and sei whales. Cape Cod’s allure has cut through the morning fog creating a timeless and prestigious history. The maritime wireless station WCC opened in Chatham in 1914, which had a hand in the communications of Amelia Earhart, Howard Hughes and Admiral Byrd. Today, tourists delight in the few hot months and warm Indian Summers by sipping local cranberry cocktails and sampling regional shellfish such as oysters and clams and crustaceous lobsters.
