The Destination
The Enchanted Islands and the Islands of the Tortoises are two of the many names given to the Galapagos Islands, an archipelago of volcanic islands located on the equator, west of Ecuador. The islands are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and in 2007, UNESCO put the Galapagos Islands on their World Heritage in Danger list as well. The surrounding ocean is a marine reserve second only in size to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Every island is part of Ecuador’s national park system and together they are famed for their beautiful geography and biodiversity. It was their vast number of endemic species that were highlighted in the studies of Charles Darwin, leading to his theory of evolution by natural selection. The archipelago consists of 16 main islands, 6 smaller, and 10 rocks and islets, the oldest land formation of which is believed to have been formed 5 to 10 million years ago and some of which are still being formed by volcanic activity. Isla Santa Cruz has the largest human population among the islands and is home to the Charles Darwin Research Station and the Galapagos National Park Service headquarters. The Santa Cruz Highlands are renowned for lava tunnels where large tortoise populations are found. Black Turtle Cove, surrounded by mangroves, is used as a mating area and Cerro Dragon, with a flaming lagoon is also revered for its land iguana’s foraging.
