The Destination
Prior to the 1850’s the Lampasas Territory was Indian country, occupied by branches of the Comanche tribe. Legend was that the seven springs in the area held healing and recuperative powers. Texas first female governor, Miriam Ferguson commissioned Captain J.F. Brannon of the 9th Infantry in June 1933 to build Lampasas State Park. 193 men of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) went to work clearing brush, building roads, a native stone entrance, a concession house, low water dam, native stone cabins, and fire pits, as well as a baseball field and polo grounds. All of the native limestone was quarried from the area. The park opened on June 12, 1934. It was sold in 1994 to its current owner, Dr. Carl Cannon, who turned it into an exclusive member-only fishing and exotic game hunting ranch.
